Examples of compound notation
The chemical formulae are symbolized by
1) the number before the hyphen giving the position of double bond
[Z = (
Z)-configuration, E = (
E)-configuration] or the following functional groups in the chain,
≡ = triple bond
epo =
cis-epoxy ring
ket = carbonyl group
Me = methyl side chain
2) the number before the colon giving the carbon atoms in the straight chain,
3) the words after the colon giving the terminal functional groups as follows,
OH = alcohol
OFo = formate of alcohol
OAc = acetate of alcohol
OPr = propionate of alcohol
OBu = butyrate of alcohol
OisoBu = isobutyrate of alcohol
OisoVa = isovalerate (3-methylbutanoate) of alcohol
ONO2 = nitrate
Ald = aldehyde
CN = nitrile
H = hydrocarbon
Ate = ester of a long chain acid
For example;
bombykol => E10,Z12-16:OH
disparlure => Me2,epo7-18:H ((7R,8S)-(+)-isomer)
